Behavioral interviews: how to use STAR without sounding rehearsed
STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) shapes the answer. The real trick is picking the right story before you sit down.
STAR is a compass, not a script. What trips most candidates isn't the structure — it's choosing which story to tell mid-interview.
Prepare 6–10 stories beforehand covering the common themes: leadership, conflict, failure, initiative, measurable outcome, collaboration. One story often serves multiple questions.
Situation (20% of the time): minimum context. Task (10%): the specific objective. Action (50%): what you did, not what the team did. Result (20%): number, timeline, impact.
Practice out loud and time yourself. Ideal answers land between 90 and 120 seconds. Longer becomes a monologue. Jornatta's simulator generates level-appropriate questions and lets you train live.
